Andrew has today reaffirmed his commitment to supporting BAE Systems and the wider defence industry in Lancashire, as he raised pressing concerns earlier today in Parliament about the future of the Typhoon assembly line at BAE Systems’ Warton site.
Speaking during Business Questions, Andrew highlighted his efforts to secure clarity from the Ministry of Defence on its long-term plans for sovereign defence capabilities and the impact on skilled jobs in Fylde and Lancashire.
Andrew said:
"I have raised these concerns repeatedly – in Ukraine statements, with Defence Ministers, through written parliamentary questions, and even directly with the unions. Most recently, I asked whether the RAF’s plans to order 24 Typhoon jets were included in the budget, only to discover they are not. Worryingly, rumours suggest the RAF may instead favour American-produced F-35s over British-made Typhoons. This raises significant questions about how the government will sustain critical jobs and skills in our region, particularly at BAE Systems, as we transition to the Global Combat Air Programme."Unfortunately, the response I’ve received from the Ministry of Defence has been vague and unconvincing. This is why I’ve now called for a formal statement outlining the government’s plans to ensure Lancashire remains at the forefront of UK defence manufacturing, safeguarding thousands of local jobs."
Leader of the House Lucy Powell praised Andrew for his tireless advocacy, noting his innovative and determined approach to getting answers. She assured him that she would raise his concerns directly with the Secretary of State for Defence to secure a detailed response.
Andrew also raised serious concerns about the lack of clear support for Typhoon production in the recent budget. “The absence of funding for new Typhoon orders in the RAF’s plans sends the wrong message to our defence industry and undermines our sovereign capabilities. The government must provide greater certainty and financial backing to ensure we protect local jobs and maintain the UK’s global leadership in defence innovation,” Andrew added.
